These are insider tips for achieving a professional looking job when installing new
Deadbolt Locks,
Knob Locks or
Lever Locks.
Installing the bolt or latch locking mechanisms with their strike plates, is not a particularly difficult job. But, alinging and correctly positioning for the recession hole in the jamb so that it can recieve the locking mechanism, can be quite tedious. Use the following methods for accurately marking strike holes and their strike plates on wood doors:
1- Dab a light coat of flat white wall paint on the end of the bolt/latch, close the door and throw the locking mechanism against the jamb.
2- Hold it for a few seconds and retract the bolt/latch.
3- The paint will leave a good marking where you will need to drill the strike hole.
4- Next, screw the strike plate on the jamb, then use a sharp razor blade to trace around the edges of the strike plate.
5- Unscrew the strike plate and chisel out the wood between the cuts made with the razor.
These steps will noticeably help to produce more perfect holes and edges for just about any
Deadbolt Locks,
Knob Locks or
Lever Locks Sets. We consider this insider technique to be more effective than many of the expensive manufacturer made mortising tools available, which do not eliminate the possibility of chipping or splintering the wood door surface.
